Wheeling Men’s Soccer Team Earns United Soccer Coach’s Team Academic Award. Wheeling, W. Va. – With classes starting back up on Monday, and students returning to campus, Wheeling University is ready to go for another semester. The Wheeling University Men’s Soccer team heads into the new semester with plenty to celebrate in the classroom, as they earned a United Soccer Coach’s Team Academic Award for their work during the first semester.

As a team, the Cardinals produced a 3.23 team GPA, earning them the achievement for their hard work in the classroom. In order to qualify for the award, the team must have a composite team grade point average of 3.0 for all team members who appear on the official NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA roster forms for the fall season.

The Wheeling Men’s Socced team earned the award for the first time since the 2019-2020 season, after just missing the mark a year ago. Wheeling University strives to have it’s student-athletes live up to the university’s mission of Life, Leadership, and Service with and Among Others.

The United Soccer Coach’s Team Academic Award was created to recognize student-athletes commitment to excellence in the classroom. With 17 new players coming to the team this season, they all transitioned to the classroom very well.

The Cardinals improved their record by four wins this past season on the field, going 5-11-1 and 4-10-1 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play. With many of their top scorers coming back, including Richard Afolayanka, Daniel Skarpnes, and Hugo Rodriguez, the Cardinals are looking to continue both their success on the field and their success in the classroom.
