Arsenal News: The Gunners suffered their latest setback in the hunt for UEFA Champions League football. Though the Arsenal side struggled for inspiration, Norwegian midfielder Martin Ødegaard proved to be the best performer on the night.
Mikel Arteta’s side dropped two crucial points as they drew 0-0 with Burnley at the Emirates Stadium. Furthermore, the result left the Gunners at 6th place in the Premier League table.
Burnley started the game well but the Gunners took over midway into the first half. Alexandre Lacazette and Martin Ødegaard came close but were not able to find the back of the net for Arsenal.
Arsenal started on the strong foot in the second half and dominated the possession stats. The Gunners took a total of 20 shots but could only test Nick Pope 5 times as they failed to score past the keeper. The draw proved vital for Burnley who is fighting for survival at the bottom of the table.
Martin Ødegaard impresses the Arsenal fans
Mikel Arteta wanted attacking intent from his players. Owing to this, the manager picked Saka, Smith-Rowe, Martinelli, Ødegaard, and Lacazette in the playing XI.
Fans would not have expected much from Ødegaard as he was just returning after beating Covid. But it was the Norwegian midfielder who outshone the rest of the players in the goalless draw against Burnley.
Martin Ødegaard created chances for his teammates throughout the game. And to add to this, the Norwegian even came close to scoring from a free-kick himself.
Ødegaard initially joined the Gunners on loan in January 2021. His performances impressed the North London clubs board, owing to which Arsenal paid €41m in transfer fee to sign the Norwegian from Real Madrid in the 2021 summer transfer window.
The 23-year old has had a decent 2021/22 Premier League campaign. Martin Ødegaard has scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists in 19 league appearances for Arsenal this season. His performance against Burnley was certainly special. Hence this got a lot of Arsenal fans singing praises about the midfielder on Twitter. A few fans could not even believe that the 23-year old is even an Arsenal player.
What’s next for the Norwegian?
Martin Ødegaard shot to fame after making his debut for Norway at the age of 15. Owing to his prowess, he was picked up by Real Madrid and made his senior debut for the club at 16 years.
The Norwegian is under contract at Arsenal until 2026. Hence, if Ødegaard continues such performances and keeps progressing, he could certainly be one of the best players in the world in the next few seasons.
