Chelsea Transfer News: Atletico Madrid is interested in signing Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso in the summer. He is a favourite of manager Diego Simeone.
MARCA reports that Marcos Alonso has surfaced as a potential target for Atletico Madrid on yet another occasion. Diego Simeone, the manager of the current La Liga winners, is on the lookout for a new left-back, with the Chelsea defender being named as one of his top targets.
Even though a January transfer has been ruled out, Atletico Madrid is anticipated to make a bid for the player in the summer of 2022.
Alonso’s current contract at Stamford Bridge ends after the current campaign next year. The defender is content with his present situation at Chelsea, having just taken over as the club’s first-choice left wing-back after the injury to Ben Chilwell, who was ruled out for the duration of the season with a knee problem.
So far this season, the Spaniard has appeared in 17 Premier League games for Chelsea. He has scored one goal and provided two assists. He has not been perfect in his performances, though, and Thomas Tuchel’s recent switch to a back four may make it more difficult for him to find his place in the club.
It’s also worth noting that Chelsea is in dire need of a new left-back before the January transfer market shuts its doors. In recent weeks, the Blues signed Dylan Williams from Derby County. However, Tuchel would like to recruit VfB Stuttgart’s upcoming star, Borna Sosa, with Filip Kostic also being a possibility for the German strategist.
Chelsea Transfer News: The Blues are in search of a new left back
The club may sign a new left-back, either in January or in the summer. This would raise concerns about Alonso’s long-term future at the club, particularly if Chilwell recovers from injury.
Chelsea is keeping an eye on his status at the club, as are Atletico Madrid and Serie A side Napoli. A transfer away from Stamford Bridge may be a natural option for the player.
There is no lack of alternatives at left wing-back for Atletico Madrid. They have the services of Renan Lodi and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco to choose from.
Carrasco has been significantly more prominent in a fully-fledged offensive position than Lodi. Lodi has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular for La Liga champions Atletico Madrid. Simeone has been forced to look for a left-back as a result of this.
Given his previous experience playing in a wing-back setup, Alonso is an excellent choice. The Spaniard provides tremendous offensive assistance on the wings. He might flourish in Simeone’s pendulating 3-5-2 formation, which can be converted to a 4-3-3 with ease if necessary.
The Chelsea defender’s contract is set to expire in 2023. This means he might be available for a bargain-basement price the following summer.
