Manchester United News: Club’s Change in Formation

Manchester United News: Football is very unpredictable. In the case of Manchester United, it’s about the formation. The Red Devils have switched back to playing the very formation Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tried to implement last summer to be successful.

United was gaining an identity of being a counter-attacking team and having no plan B. The Norwegian coach looked to switch things from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3 to dictate the game.

The formation worked at first and United blitzed Everton in pre-season. The record English champions then dismantled Leeds at Old Trafford.

However, as the form began to dip, Solskjaer went back to the predictable approach but this time without success. The former Molde manager couldn’t do the required changes and ended up losing the job even before December started.

Manchester United News: Change of system working for Rangnick?

Rangnick’s regime started off shakily. The German’s 4-2-2-2 looked out of sorts with the personnel at United. However, the former RB Leipzig manager made a quick switch to 4-3-3 and so far, it’s working for him.

So far, the pairing of McTominay and Fred is working. The Brazilian is taking up an advanced role whereas the Scotsman is in a deeper role. However, United needs an outright central defensive midfielder to dominate the formation.

The United fans as well as the hierarchy accept that midfield is the ‘biggest problem’ in their squad. The three-time European champions are already looking for players to fulfil that role in the summer. If the reports are to be believed, CDM is the top priority regardless of whoever remains in charge.

Everyone around United believes that the club needs to get way to winning games in an authoritative way. The fans want to see the team dominate possession and get the goals to win the games.

Change of formation for the new manager?

When Solskjaer was in charge, the 20 times Premier League champions had great results against top sides apart from Liverpool. However, those wins always came with underdog tags where United got the goals on counter and defended for most of the game.

The current formation of 4-3-3 formation is described by Rangnick as ‘one holding six, two eights and three offensive players. The formation used is the likely one for the manager coming in next at Old Trafford.

The change in the formation also suggests that United is likely to bring in someone else rather than going with Rangnick. The 4-2-2-2 set-up was ditched after a few bad games. It looks like United is already gearing up for their future tactical shape.

It is also seen as a signal to lure the Dutch mastermind Erik Ten Hag or even Mauricio Pochettino. The Ajax manager likes to play in a 4-3-3 and the same can be said for the Paris Saint Germain boss. The two names are said to be the frontrunners for the United job in the summer.
