Pep Guardiola to be offered Netherlands national team job in 2023

Manchester City News: Pep Guardiola recently made it clear that he intends to stay put at Manchester City until his contract expires in 2023. But the former Barcelona manager could then be moving on to manage the Netherlands national team.

The Manchester City boss has been at the club since 2016. In these years, Pep Guardiola has helped City add three Premier League titles to their cabinet. To add to this, the Sky Blues are again favourites to win the league title at the end of this season.

But Pep Guardiola seems to have unfinished business in the UEFA Champions League. He led Manchester City to the finals, losing out to Chelsea last season.

Guardiola last won the UEFA Champions League title with Barcelona in 2011. Since then, he has failed to win the “Big Ears” at Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Hence, he would be eager to win it back before his City contract expires.

Could Pep Guardiola be managing the Netherlands soon?

As per Mirror, Pep Guardiola will be offered to take “total football” back to its home nation. The Netherlands FA is reportedly in contact with the manager and is looking to sign him up.

As stated earlier, Pep Guardiola’s contract with Manchester City expires after the 2022/2023 season. The Spaniard recently signed a two-year extension with City last August, hence keeping him at the club until 2023.

The KNVB (Netherlands FA) had reportedly approached Pep Guardiola about his future plans before he signed the extension. And they are hoping to sign him up in 2023 after his contract ends.

The reason why the Netherlands are confident in getting the Spaniard is Johan Cruyff. Pep Guardiola has been a very vocal supporter of the former Barcelona and Dutch manager.

Pep Guardiola himself has stated before that he will look into managing a top international nation in the future. To add to this, Guardiola harbours the total football philosophy of Johan Cruyff that took the Netherlands to the World Cup finals in 1974.

Frank De Boer was sacked as the Netherlands manager after a disappointing Euros campaign. Following this, the Dutch turned to Louis Van Gaal to lead them at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Will Guardiola take the Spain job?

Pep Guardiola is a former Spain international, and he has made 47 appearances for the national team. But it is unlikely that he would manage Spain as he is a vocal supporter of Catalan independence.

Argentina also reportedly approached Guardiola in 2018. But the Spaniard made it clear that he has no interest in cutting off ties with Manchester City. Hence it has to be seen what Pep Guardiola decides when his contract ends in 2023.
